Maria Hassabi

Maria Hassabi is a New York-based director, choreographer and performance artist. Born in Cyprus—a country she represented at the 2013 Venice Biennale—she moved to the United States in 1990 to study at the California Institute of the Arts, then moved to New York in 1994 to study at the Merce Cunningham Studio. Her practice explores the relation of the body to the image; her works draw their strength from the tension between the dancer as both human subject and artistic object. She is regularly invited to hold workshops, participate in panels and give lectures at universities and festivals around the world, which brings us to why she is in town: her hypnotising Intermission is the centrepiece of Melbourne Festival’s Framed Movements exhibition at ACCA.
