MPavilion final weeks! A cheat sheet...

Thursday 15 January 2015, 8.12am

The final weeks of our program are here and we're not wasting a single sunny day. Or a rainy one for that matter. Want to catch a flick on an inflatable cinema screen? In need of a mind-de-cluttering morning meditation? Keen to help a certain Melbourne fashion label celebrate its tenth birthday, or get advice from legendary local artists and designers? Behold: our cheat sheet guide to the remaining meets, talks, screenings and DJ sets happening at MPavilion before we close the shutters at dusk on 1 February.

PARTIES AND LAUNCHES

Ladies of Leisure Edition II launch
Fri 16 Jan, 7–9pm

TONIGHT. Ladies of Leisure launch Edition II, the second iteration of their publication all about young Melbourne women who are making it happen on their own. Come on down and help the LOL ladies celebrate with beers, high-fives, tunes by DJ Susan and an installation by Practice Studio Practice.

Alpha60 X
Thu 29 Jan, 8–9pm

Help another Melbourne favourite celebrate a launch—as well as an anniversary. Alpha60 are throwing a party at MPavilion to celebrate ten years of their rebellious take on classic style—and it involves you being the first to lay eyes on their latest collection.

MMEETS

Our Office for Good Design–curated MMeets series is on the verge of wrapping up. Head on down before they're all meeted-out. Creative studios Haw-lin Services (Berlin) and U_P (Melbourne) present an exploratory workshop this Saturday morning, then Centre for Style director Matthew Linde will be 'spring cleaning' the constructs of style on Sunday. The Broad Place want to reset your post-Christmas brain in their morning wellness meets next week (Wednesday 21 and Saturday 24 January), while Stephen Banham wants to use your brain as a logo-experiment in his drawing session on Sunday 25 January. Finally, on Wednesday 28 January, Nathan Gray and Shelley Lasica perform a live rehearsal-performance-reflection piece together for the third and final time. All spots are free, but you have to book 'em.

MMUSIC

Only three of our Sunday listening parties to go... This Sunday, expect strong vibes and plenty of '70s gems when Chapter Music's Guy Blackman and Ben O’Connor hit the decks for an afternoon of gay musical history in the midst of Midsumma. Make sure to also pop next Sunday's session into your diary: DJ Susan (aka Becky Sui Zhen) brings her eclectic everyday soundtrack to MPavilion. And we couldn't leave without a proper send-off: we've got a special event planned for our final session on Sunday 1 February—STAY TUNED...

SCREENINGS AND DISCUSSIONS

Blow Up Cinema screenings
Tue 20 Jan, 8–10.30pm: The Fountainhead
Wed 28 Jan, 8–11pm: I Am Love

Blow Up Cinema inflates at MPavilion for two summer screenings: The Fountainhead, King Vidor's black-and-white film adaptation of Ayn Rand's best-selling novel, screens Tuesday 20 January; and I Am Love, a tragic love story set against the grand architecture of Milan and starring Tilda Swinton, screens Wednesday 28 January. (If it's sunny, we'll turn the screen out towards the gardens; if it's rainy we'll point it towards the cosy cushions and blankets.)

Signal Curators art chats
Fri 16 Jan, Thu 22 Jan and Fri 23 Jan, 1–1.45pm

Young people from the Signal Curators program are down here at MPavilion, asking pertinent questions of artists and designers: Where do you get your inspiration? What's your best piece of advice for aspiring artists? How do I tell my parents I'm not going to become an accountant? At lunchtime today, Kim Jaeger of Pot Heads fame is on the spot; next Thursday, it's hot-seat time for Jenny Bannister, Lia Tabrah and Kate Geck, while Tai Snaith and Miso discuss art-beds on Friday.

RMIT Design Hub presents BLOOM charrette
Tue 27 Jan, 10am–1pm

Melbourne design practices Assemble, Edwards Moore, Sibling and ARM Architecture will use game-like logic to build sculptures using the bright pink pieces of Alisa Andrasek and Jose Sanchez’s project BLOOM. Come down and watch the results unfurl.

MRELAY

To celebrate four months of talks, meets and collaborations we're putting on an epic, team-sport-style finale. Join us from 11am to 11pm (or any timelslot therein) on Saturday 31 January for 12-hour conversational chain-reaction starring some of Melbourne's leading thinkers, makers and doers. Each speaker will interview a fellow guest for 15 minutes, and then another for 15 minutes, resulting in rapid conversations curated around four themes: Pavilions Intimate Publics, Dreaming and Nocturne. To RSVP (and get updates on all the speakers) join our Facebook event HERE. Can't wait, mate.
